"The First Stage of Establishing a Collection of Heirloom Plants at the National Botanical Garden"

Project Information

  • Title: "The First Stage of Establishing a Collection of Heirloom Plants at the National Botanical Garden"

  • Implementer: National Botanical Garden

  • Partner: Latvian Permaculture Association

  • Goal: To establish and maintain field collections of Latvian agricultural genetic resources, or landrace varieties, at the National Botanical Garden. The pilot project focuses on creating a field collection of sweet pea varieties.

This project has enabled the National Botanical Garden to begin establishing and maintaining field collections of Latvian agricultural genetic resources, or landrace varieties, which are rapidly disappearing in Latvia due to the decline of rural populations and rapid changes in traditional rural lifestyles. The pilot project aimed to create a field collection of one type of crop - garden peas - while simultaneously developing guidelines for selecting heirloom plants, describing landrace varieties or heirloom crops, designing public exhibitions, and cultivating selected landrace varieties in sufficient quantities for a safety collection at the Gene Bank and a public exhibition in the coming years.
